Emergency obstetric and neonatal care skills training.

Post graduate students undertaking Master of Science in Midwifery and Paediatric Nursing were trained on emergency obstetric and neonatal care skills in a joint training session by the University of Nairobi (UoN) and Kenyatta University (KU).

The aim of the session was to demonstrate and allow the students to perform skills in emergency obstetric and neonatal care.

The session was organized by two midwifery lecturers – Dr. Joyce Jebet Department of Nursing Sciences (UoN) and Dr. Eunice Atsali (KU). A total of 8 students from Kenyatta University and University of Nairobi department of nursing participated in the skills demonstration workshop. The selected skills demonstrated were:

  • Neonatal resuscitation
  • Maternal resuscitation
  • Vaginal Breech birth
  • Shoulder dystocia
  • Manual vacuum aspiration
  • Assisted vaginal birth (Vacuum)

This was a second session done jointly by the two institutions.

Theoretical discussions included discussions on management of shock and the unconscious patient and obstetric haemorrhage.
