The University of Nairobi’s (UoN) Department of Nursing Sciences received a donation of three Ambu bags from Regina Lau, a Primary Health Care Nurse from Australia.
The medical equipment was donated for airway management training of medical students. The device is a hand-held apparatus and is used to assist paediatric and adult patients with breathing difficulties by delivering oxygen. It is commonly used in emergency situations to assist with breathing during respiratory failure or cardiac arrest.
Simulation Nurse, Edith Mugane demonstrated to students how the machine can be used on a paediatric patient at the department’s Simulation laboratory.
The department also held a demonstration on the birthing process for medical students.
The demonstration explored the mechanism of labor where Nurse Edith practically simulated the birth process for practical education of the students.
During the class students engaged with the medical dummies under the guidance of Ms. Mugane .
This ensured that the students were equipped with real life situations and complications of the birthing process to supplement what they are taught theoretically in class.
She urged the students to take advantage of practical classes and to be fully involved during their clinical rotations to ensure effective learning takes place.
