University of Nairobi nursing students participated in a career talk on international nursing opportunities, with a special focus on Austria, during a session held on Tuesday, 10th February 2026.

The forum, themed “Dreaming of Nursing Abroad? Nursing Opportunities in Austria,” aimed at equipping students with practical knowledge on global nursing career pathways while emphasizing the importance of maintaining high professional and ethical standards in international practice.

The session brought together guest speakers from Austria, including professionals involved in nursing recruitment and healthcare workforce development. The speakers were joined by University of Nairobi nursing alumni currently working in Austria, who shared firsthand experiences about their transition, professional growth, and adaptation to the Austrian healthcare system. Their testimonies highlighted the global competitiveness of University of Nairobi nursing graduates.

During the presentation, speakers emphasized the growing demand for nurses in Austria, largely driven by an aging population and workforce shortages in the healthcare sector. Internationally trained nurses were highlighted as an important part of Austria’s strategy to sustain quality healthcare services.

Students were also taken through key aspects of working in Austria, including competitive salary packages, favorable working hours, employee welfare benefits, job security, and opportunities for professional growth and specialization. The session further clarified that University of Nairobi nursing qualifications are recognized in Austria, subject to credential evaluation and fulfillment of regulatory and licensing requirements.

In addition, students received guidance on the requirements and pathways for nurses seeking employment in Austria. These included preparation of academic and professional documents, German language proficiency requirements, licensing and credential recognition procedures, as well as visa and work permit application processes.

The career talk attracted strong participation from nursing students across different academic years. An interactive question-and-answer session allowed students to seek clarification on timelines, costs, language training, and available support systems for nurses pursuing opportunities abroad.

The session resulted in increased awareness of global nursing opportunities, improved understanding of international career pathways, and renewed motivation among students to explore overseas nursing careers. It also strengthened connections between students, alumni, and international healthcare stakeholders.
