Obstetrics /Midwifery and Gynaecological Nursing

Midwifery, Obstetric and Gynecological Nursing Thematic Unit provides a course in two units as an integral
part of Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Year II and III second as part of the course for both the direct
entry students and the RN-BSc.N (upgrading) programmes.

In addition, the Thematic Unit offers training in Master of Science in Nursing (Obstetric Nursing/ Midwifery).
There is a strong focus on linking theory to practice in clinical placement settings in a manner to meet the
needs of women and their families in an individualized, culturally sensitive manner.

Students are actively engaged in theoretical and practical instructions guided by well-established Senate
approved curriculum that is revised as required to accommodate the latest in knowledge, skills and
practice, in tandem with the International Council of Midwifery (ICM) Standards. Students and members of
staff are actively engaged in research, consultancy, community service, partnership, authorship and many
other attributes that add to knowledge and the learning process.

The training is of top quality aimed at the world market. To achieve our expectations, the Unit appreciates
the availability of facilities such as the skills lab and opportunities offered by the Department of Nursing of
the University of Nairobi.

Midwifery, obstetric and gynecological nursing thematic area provides a course in two units as an integral part of Bachelor of Science in nursing in second and third year part of the course. This includes gynecological and reproductive health nursing in level 2 and midwifery/ obstetric nursing in level 3. It also participates in the distant and e-learning upgrading program for registered nurses to elevate them to Bachelor of Science in nursing level. In addition, the thematic area also offers training in masters in midwifery and obstetric nursing and has plans to widen its areas of interest.

Instructions are also given in the rich historical background of the specializations in its interest and strong reflection made on future tress and perspectives. Always appreciated is the advancement in science and technology.

Students and members of staff are actively engaged in research, consultancy, community service, partnership, authorship and many other attributes that add to knowledge and the learning process. Our training is of top quality aimed at the world market. We have trained students from Tanzania and Cameroon and intend to expand in our global performance standing. We have also trained students who have become lectures in many established universities and look forward to more input in providing for the academic and professional market. We have a great vision that aims at having positive impact on the quality of human life and playing our role in reducing unnecessary mortality and morbidity globally.
